…before assisting others

We’ve all been through dry seasons of life. Dry financially, or socially or spiritually… Times when we feel stuck, not going anywhere, and there’s no one to lead us out of it, because maybe no one notices. And perhaps we too lack the motivation to care ourselves.
There is a lot we can learn about ourselves in times like these. But we don’t often notice it’s affect on those under our leadership during those seasons.
No matter where you are at in life you are a leader in some way. Whether it be to your children, your spouse, your group of friends, or at your job, there is always an arena of life where we need to be a leader. What are you doing to prepare and develop yourself for that certainty? If you are going to lead others you must first lead yourself.
We’ve all been on the airplane ignoring the flight attendant as he explains that before we assist others with their oxygen masks we need to first put on our own. The fact is that we cannot rescue others if we need rescued ourselves. Self leadership comes before the effective leadership of others.
When we use the word leadership, it assumes we are heading somewhere.
So, where are you headed, personally? Where are you taking yourself?
Do you pray for yourself?
Do you set goals for yourself?
Do you have a vision for who God wants you to become?
Do you take care of your body?
It is hard work. It takes discipline. It takes motivation.
Where does that all come from? Well, I haven’t gotten there yet, but I feel like, by God’s grace, I’ve made some good progress.
In our transition of life right now, leadership of my wife and my children is very important, but in order to lead them to a destination, I need to to know where I’m going, first.
As difficult as it can be sometimes to lead those who follow me, I’ve found that the hardest person to lead is me.
