The Last Fall

The kids have the weekend off of school (Thursday and Friday) so we decided to take a drive to go on a hike and picnic and see the Adirondack leaves at the peak of color. We had never been to Newcomb and had always heard that the drive was beautiful, so it seemed like a perfect family excursion. Not as soon as we pull out of our own driveway, did the kids (and us) notice all the beautiful colors changing on the roadsides and mountainsides. Joanna makes a passing comment, “This is our last fall, Chile doesn’t have a pretty fall like this…”
“Say what?!??,” I thought to myself.
That’s not cool.
But its OK.
That’s pretty significant. We’ve been going slow-motion through these last few seasons of ‘lasts.’
Our last Adirondack Spring
Our last NY summer camp season
Our last month (or so) in our house
Our last season of small group at Grace
And now our last colorful Autumn
I suppose, it will take a long time to discover all of the differences between “the now” and “the next.” But it just causes me to stop and enjoy the ‘lasts’ soaking in the transition, being thankful for what God has let us be a part of and the beauty of this place. And then to look forward to the ‘firsts’ that we have ahead for us in Chile, because that will be our new home. Knowing that God’s beauty is not just in the Adirondack Mountains, but it is also in Chile, and there is a lot for us to discover there.
We are certainly looking forward to all those ‘firsts!’
